How to Use Crackle Paint on Wood Furniture?
Here is the method you can follow:
Place a drop cloth on the floor and ensure the room is well-ventilated.
Start by sanding the wood. If the surface is large, I recommend using an orbital sander.
After sanding, wipe down the surface using a tack cloth to get rid of dust and debris.
If you don’t wish to have the previous colour show through, apply a single coat of primer using a brush. Let the primer dry completely.
Apply the base coat of the paint over the wood toward the wood grain. You must remember that the base coat will appear through the crackle paint.
Let the coat dry and then apply the second coat. Let the wood dry overnight after the second coat.
Use white school glue and apply it over the wood using a paintbrush. In case of finer hairline cracks, brush a thin layer of the glue. For larger ones, apply a thicker layer.
Depending on the crackle medium, you need to give a drying time ranging from 1 to 4 hours. Check the bottle for the directions and give ample time for the glue to dry.
Apply the topcoat on top of the crackle medium layer. Use a matte or flat latex paint. Let the piece dry overnight.
If you wish the wood to have a more distressed look, use 150-grit sandpaper to remove some of the paint in the desired regions, but stay within the limit.
Finish by applying a protective sealant by following the instructions on the product. Brush a coat and let it dry. If you want the furniture to naturally distress over time, skip using the sealant.
