If you're thinking how to stop noisy drain pipes, you're not alone. I know it’s frustrating when the pipes in your home make a racket, whether it’s from gurgling, banging, or creaking. I also faced similar issues with my drain pipes recently. I called a plumber to fix it and also asked him for some easy steps if the same happens in the future. Fortunately, he shared a few simple fixes which I have shared below, and you can also try.
How to Stop Noise in Water Pipes?
One of the first things the plumber said you should do is inspect the source. Is the noise coming from a clog? A loose pipe? Or maybe the water pressure is too high?
Here are the steps he informed me.
You must start by clearing any blockages. Sometimes, a simple plunger or a drain snake can solve the issue by allowing water to flow smoothly again.
Try to tighten up loose pipes with pipe clamps or attach them to the wall.
If the noise is still a problem, try wrapping your pipes in soundproofing materials.
High water pressure can be the culprit. Reducing it at the main valve can help eliminate the noisy water flow.
If you’re hearing that familiar banging sound, installing water hammer arrestors could be the solution.
If you’ve tried all these and still hear the noise, it might be time to call a professional plumber. I hope you found this helpful.

Hello there. I recently observed a loud noise in my sink drain pipes. It started increasing to the extent I once woke up from my sleep. So, I called a plumber to understand how to stop noisy drain pipes. He told me we could use soundproofing material to wrap around the pipe and stop the noise. I followed the process he was doing and even helped him wrap it around so I could learn it. I am sharing the method below.
How to Stop Noise in Water Pipes?
Wrapping the drain pipes with a soundproofing substance will dampen the vibration and block noise. Here is the process you can follow to block noise in your water drain pipes:
Start by cleaning the pipe to remove dirt and dust.
Now, measure the pipe’s length to understand the amount of material you’ll need.
Cut the pipe sound insulation as per the needed size with a utility knife. You can also cut the material during the process of wrapping it.
Begin at one end of the pipe. Peel back the edge of the blue peel and stick backing. This will reveal 4-5 inches of the backing.
Hold the material at a slight angle. Press down with firm hands. This will ensure that the material sticks to the pipe well.
Next, keep on peeling and pressing firmly the peel and stick backing as you move down the pipe.
If you see any wrinkles in the material, cut it and start over.
This is all about how to stop drain pipe noise. I hope you find these steps useful.
