Summary
To soundproof a door between two rooms, you must close gaps, add weight, and decrease vibrations. Begin by securing all air gaps with door sweeps, weatherstripping, or draft stoppers. To reduce noise, add MDF panels, mass-loaded vinyl, or heavy drapes to the door. Use rubber seals or acoustic panels to reduce vibrations.

I have some experience because I got two soundproof rooms built. Here is how to soundproof a door between two rooms:

  • Since the bottom gap is where the most sound enters a door, install a strong, acoustic door sweep there.

  • To seal off any further openings around the door, you should install weather stripping around the doorframe.

  • To reduce noise, you can also hang long, thick curtains, mass-loaded vinyl, or acoustic foam panels on or in front of the door.

There is just so much you can do with a single door, and if you're serious about it, it's costly.

There isn't much you can do for low-frequency sounds unless you address the walls as well, but mass is what blocks LF sound. If you already have a solid core door, you can attach lead sheets or additional MDF to it, but you'll probably need to replace the hinges. Hope you found this helpful.

A door between two rooms can be made soundproof by adding mass to the door, sealing all air openings, and utilising inexpensive, basic materials to absorb vibrations. The primary reasons, particularly in apartments and ordinary Indian homes, are hollow-core doors and gaps surrounding the frame. I have shared a step-by-step guide on how to soundproof a door between two rooms below.

How to Soundproof Doors Between Two Rooms?

  • Seal every gap:

Even minor spaces can release a lot of sound.

    • Install a bottom door sweep.

    • Around the door frame, apply weatherstripping.

    • If changing the hardware is not an option, add a draft stopper.

  • Give the door more mass:

    Heavier doors reduce noise better.

    • Place mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) behind a fabric panel.

    • Fix a strong MDF or plywood panel to the door.

    • Budget-friendly options include soundproof curtains and shifting blankets.

  • Treat door vibrations.

For clarity and echo, place rubber door seals and acoustic foam panels on the side that faces the room.

  • Upgrade your door.

Solid-core wooden doors should be used in place of hollow-core doors.

In most households, these methods can lower noise by 50% to 70%. Hope you found this helpful.
