I used to keep cold drinks on my wooden dining table without using coasters, unaware of the fact that unless a waterproof covering is applied, wood will naturally absorb water. The wood began to swell, shrink, and form bubbles as a result of exposure to liquids and humidity over time. I saw obvious surface swelling within a few days. But fortunately, I learned how to repair swollen wood tables, and was able to remove the bubbles.
How to Fix Swollen Wood Table?
Although preventing water from getting on wooden furniture is obviously the best approach to avoid this, accidents happen, especially on tables that we use on a daily basis.
Let the Table Dry Out: I started by letting the table air dry entirely. After wiping off any surface moisture, I brought it indoors to a warm, dry area. I read that rushing the drying process could cause the wood to break, so I took my time.
Sand the Surface and Apply Furniture Oil: I used fine-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the swelling region once it had dried. This eliminated bubbles and smoothed out the surface. I then used a cloth to wipe away the dust and apply furniture oil. I allowed it to soak for a few minutes before thoroughly wiping off the extra oil.
Use an Iron: I also placed a moist rag over the region and applied a warm iron to it for a short while to help with any residual swelling. Ensured to avoid keeping the iron in one place for too long. This assisted in drawing moisture from below the surface.
Following these steps completely took away my weekend, but they really helped bring my table back to life.
