Last year, we got our front door repaired by a carpenter. To know how to repair front door, you first need to determine the level of damage and whether it’s repairable. If the door is beyond repair, you may have to replace it. The process of fixing your door will also differ depending on the type of damage. Our wooden door was damaged because of moisture and lack of proper ventilation, which led to rot.
How Do You Replace a Front Door?
I learned from our carpenter that wood is vulnerable to various elements, which lead to damage if not maintained properly. He also mentioned repairing a sun-damaged door will differ from that of a water-damaged door. I am sharing the steps that he followed to fix our rotted door.
First, he inspected the door completely to identify the areas where the door had crumpled.
Then, he removed those parts using a chisel. To prevent the remaining exposed areas from further decay, he used a wood preserver on them.
When he removed the wood, there were many gaps, which he filled with wood filler. I remember him mentioning that it’s usually advisable to use a polyester-based filler. And, if you have a white door, you can use a white wood filler.
After the surface was completely dry, he sanded until the area was smooth. He repeated this process about twice.
Next, he cleaned the surface to remove any loose dirt and then applied a primer to the repaired area.
Finally, he applied a weather-resistant painting.
This is how to fix a front door. I hope that gives you an idea. I would recommend opting for a professional carpentry service for a smooth repair process.
