Priming

Any stains, blemishes, and surface damage can be concealed using primer. Wood absorbs paint unevenly because of its porosity. For a smooth surface and good paint application, primer can even out the grain of the wood. Using a paintbrush, evenly apply a diluted priming coat to the entire piece of furniture, then allow it to dry completely.

Initial Coat

            

Avoid over-saturating the brush with paint. If at all feasible, cover the entire surface with wood-enamel paint, working from edge to edge. When applying paint, brush just in one direction and apply mild pressure. For an excellent finish, two coats of paint are preferable.

Applying a Second Coat

Although the majority of your painting is completed in the first coat, the second coat is only applied to ensure that the wooden furniture appears uniform throughout. Give the wood paint a full day to cure before adding the second coat.
