I was preparing my rental home for a new tenant and planned to repaint the walls. I hired a painter, and while working, he explained how to remove water paint from wall properly. He soaked the old paint with a mix of water and vinegar, then used a steam cleaner to loosen it. I observed the method and shared the entire process below.

How to Get Rid of Water Paint from the Wall?

  1. First, soak the paint with a mixture of water and vinegar.

  2. Spray the solution all over the walls and let it sit for 10 minutes.

  3. Next, carefully scrape off the paint using a putty knife. You must spray more vinegar on stubborn spots.

  4. For sections that are still difficult, use a steam cleaner.

  5. After that, wash the walls with warm, soapy water, rinse them thoroughly, and let them dry completely.

  6. Where the walls had minor scratches from scraping, the painter I hired applied joint compound. It is to repair and smooth the surface.

  7. Finally, he ensured everything was ready for a fresh coat of paint.

In my personal experience, it’s best to hire a professional for this, as removing water paint is not a DIY task.
