I recently cleaned our water tank, which was filled with dust and sand. While I completely agree with Ridhi about the method, I’d like to share my experience as well. Initially, I struggled with removing the sand as thoroughly as I had expected. So, I asked my brother to help me. Since we had a small tank, we used a power washer to ensure every particle of dirt was cleared. So, I can explain how to remove sand from water tank.
How to Clean Sand from Water Tank?
To ensure proper cleaning, you will require special tools and materials. These may include a power washer, vacuum with floor attachment, bleach, etc. If you don’t have the specific materials, I have some alternatives for you. Let’s first see the steps.
You can start by using a power washer to remove sand, dirt, or debris from the walls of the tank. If you don’t want the washer, you can use a strong brush, a mop with a handle, or any other cleaning device with a slant.
I’d also recommend using a stiff bristled brush to scrub the walls and bottom of the tank thoroughly.
Then, connect a high-pressure hose and rinse the walls of the tank properly. This can be a little time taking as you need to direct the hose properly towards the corners and difficult areas.
Once you’re done, it’s important to treat the water to ensure it’s free from any contaminants. You can either go for chlorination as suggested by the previous answer, or take UV treatment. We passed the water through a small UV chamber, which is meant to kill the bacteria and other harmful contaminants.
So, this is how my brother and I cleaned our water tank. I hope this helps.

Hello there. We have a water tank placed on our terrace. Recently, I noticed sand in the tank. It was a holiday, and no one was available to clean the tank. So, I looked up how to remove sand from water tank and found an excellent solution. You can use a power washer, a strong brush, a mop or any other cleaning material to remove sand. Let me tell you how I did the cleaning.
How to Remove Sand from a Water Tank?
I started by draining the tank. I wiped any remaining moisture using a towel.
After this, I grabbed a strong brush to get rid of the sand. I used the bristles to push the sand out into a bucket to avoid mess. A better way would be to use a power washer which thoroughly removes sand and dirt.
Once I was done with scrubbing, I rinsed the dirty water in the tank using cold water.
Then, I mixed bleach and water in equal amounts and used it in the interior for the complete surface. I wore an eye mask and gloves while doing so.
The solution takes time to work. So, I left it for a couple of hours.
I then ran the bleach solution through the water supply lines of my house to clean them.
Using fresh water, I repeated the rinsing process.
Post this, I filled the tank partially with clean water.
The next step was to check for chlorine levels. I found them to be high, so I rinsed the tank’s interior again.
That is all in the method. You can follow these steps to remove sand and clean the tank thoroughly.
