Hi Buddy,

I love keeping my house spick and span. I love antique furniture, which provides my home with a very stylish look. However, recently I found out that my antique furniture needed to be refurbished. I did not have any idea about how to refurbish furniture. Hence, with a certain amount of research, I was able to refurbish them. I would like to share my experience.

By renting furniture from NoBroker, you can get a fantastic substitute for your old furniture.

You can think of refurbishing old furniture, in case you notice any of the underlying points:

  • Under the present finish, there are visible rings and watermarks

  • Even after cleaning, the surface remains sticky

  • Even after cleaning, there remain worn-out spots and imperfections

  • Because the clear finish has turned colour, the wood has darkened

  • The current finish has worn away to reveal the wood beneath

  • The paint is peeling and chipping

If you notice any of these indicators on your furniture, it's probably time to refinish it. Even if the piece doesn't show all of these indicators, you might think its current state is awful and that you'd rather refinish it completely.

How to refurbish antique furniture:
  • Clean the Piece:

The most important step in any furniture restoration or renewal project is to thoroughly clean the piece in the issue. This is especially true if the item has been stored or left outside for a lengthy period of time. Furthermore, if you don't know where the piece came from, it's probably covered in grime from dust and dirt buildup

  • Examine the current state of the furniture:

After cleaning the piece, you'll have a clearer notion of the project's total scope. White rings, paint stains, dents, chips, and cracks may be present if you're dealing with an exceptionally ancient piece.

Make a general inspection of the piece and determine what will be required to restore it. This can help you decide which tools, such as scrapers, epoxy putty, and wax filling compound, you'll need.

  • Remove the previous finish

If you've never done it before, you might be wondering how to remove the wood finish. There are two main approaches. Sanding it off is one option, and using a chemical stripper is another:

  • Sanding:

Remove the finish with coarse sandpaper, a sanding block, or a power sander until the surface is smooth

  • Chemical stripper:

Chemical stripping products are designed to remove wood finishes quickly and easily. Choose a liquid or semi-paste product that contains methylene chloride or not (MC)

  • Apply sealant

A sealer preserves the wood while also providing a foundation for the stain to spread evenly. Apply a liberal application of sealant to the wood and let it soak in. Using a clean rag, wipe away any excess. Sand the furniture surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper after the sealant has dry.

  • Wood should be stained or painted

After you've applied the sealer, you'll need to stain or paint your wood furniture. This is a personal choice for which there is no right or incorrect response

  • Apply a Finishing Coat

Putting on the last coat. After staining or painting your wooden furniture piece, the final step is to apply a finish coat. There are a variety of finish options available.

Here are some of the many brush-on and wipe-on finishes available:

  1. Oil finishes

  2. Wipe-on varnish

  3. Polyurethane varnish

  4. Wax

  5. Water-based finish

  6. Shellac

  7. Lacquer

After understanding, how to refurbish old furniture, let me provide you with tips for refinishing wooden furniture:

  • Use natural or full light

  • Maintain a clean workplace while stirring products

  • Colour-test the stain

Now if you want to sell off your old furniture and are wondering about how to price refurbished furniture, let me assist you with a few points;

  • Track all of your supplier costs and try to break them down by project

  • Consider general expenses such as marketing/branding costs, equipment/tool depreciation, booth rental, storage unit, and so on

  • Consider how much time and effort you put into painting the furniture when determining its value

  • What do others charge?

  • How much are you willing to charge? If you undervalue your worth by pricing furniture too low, you may give the idea that your work is of lower quality. You may first scare some individuals away by pricing too high, but they may not be the target demographic you're trying to reach anyhow.

These points would help you in determining the price. I conclude my answer here about how to refurbish furniture. I hope this helps:)
