How Can we Save Electricity?

One thing that has helped us to save electricity significantly and reduce our bill is to install solar panels. Although the upfront cost is a bit high, but today, you can get subsidies and there are many ways to get the panels installed while keeing cost in mind. Solar panels produce electricity as per the availability of the sun, but the output is great and reduces your electricity bill to a great extent. 

Another thing you can do to reduce electricity is keep the appliances maintained. Old appliances that need work or no longer function to the best of their ability consume a lot of energy. COVID has had a huge impact on the overall earnings we get in our home. At a point it became extremely difficult for us to pay bills and sustain our livelihood. We had to make huge cuts and curbs in our expenses. We decided to minimize our bills and that’s when my wife asked me how to reduce electricity bill in home. We laid out a plan and it worked for us. From Rs. 4000+ a month, we were able to bring it to Rs. 1500 per month. This is what we did:

We made the following things work for us to reduce electricity consumption:

1. Wall paint: It was at the peak of the summers when COVID had hit and we were so thankful that our walls around and inside the house were painted with light and sombre colours. Colours like white, lemon, pale yellow, peach, etc. are summer friendly colours which do not trap heat inside the house.

2. Switched to LED: This one made a huge difference. Instead of switching on tube lights we switched to LED bulbs. They gave out enough light to lit the room up and didn’t consume much energy.

3. Reduced usage of AC: We all are aware of the power consumption of the Air conditioner. We decided that we would all sleep in the same room and turn on the air conditioner for only a couple of hours. Rest of the time, the ceiling fan did a great job.

4. Keeping everyone together: We ensured that not many rooms were occupied throughout the day because as many rooms are in use, the consumption of electricity would increase. So we curbed that.

The trick is to be aware and take small steps. These tiny steps work towards bigger changes. Now that things are coming back on track, we have decided to install solar panels to reduce the consumption of electricity and thus finding another solution on how to reduce electricity bill in home.
