Summary
To put knockdown texture on drywall, mix joint compound with water to a smooth, rollable consistency. Apply it evenly using a roller, then create light patterns if desired. Let the texture set briefly until slightly firm, then gently flatten the peaks with a knockdown knife. Allow it to dry completely before priming and painting for a clean, professional finish.

Here is how to put knockdown texture on drywall.

  1. You will need joint compound, water, a roller, a roller sleeve, a taping knife or knockdown tool, and optional tools like a stipple brush, trowel, or a homemade dabber.

  2. Mix the joint compound with water until it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency. It should be thick enough to stick to the wall but thin enough to roll easily.

  3. Pour the prepared joint compound onto your roller. Roll it evenly across the wall or ceiling. Make sure the entire area is covered with a thin layer of texture.

  4. Use a regular-sized roller for real projects; smaller rollers or mock-up rollers work only for practice.

  5. Before knocking down the texture, you can create patterns to add depth. Use a stipple brush, trowel, or even a piece of styrofoam or plastic bag to dab designs into the wet compound.

  6. Be creative, this step is only limited by your imagination. Light dabbing creates interesting textures.

  7. Allow the texture to sit for a few minutes. The surface should be slightly firm but still wet on the peaks.

  8. Take a taping knife, trowel, or knockdown tool and lightly graze it across the peaks. Apply minimal pressure; you only want to flatten the high points, not dig into the compound. Work in small sections, moving smoothly and evenly.

  9. Avoid pressing too hard, which can remove too much texture. Continue lightly across the entire area until all peaks are knocked down and the wall or ceiling has a uniform, soft look.

  10. Allow the knockdown texture to dry completely. After it dries, you can prime and paint the wall as desired.

This method gives your drywall a professional knockdown texture with a soft, elegant finish. Hope this helps you.
