I live in Noida and believe it or not, I used to be scared most of the times when I stepped out. We all know Noida doesn’t share quite a good reputation in terms of crimes like robberies and thefts. Who are we kidding, even the food delivery guys are threatened for cooked food. Anyway, I always kept wondering how to protect home from theft in India. Those TV shows like Savdhaan India and Crime Patrol had anyway given too much information for notorious guys to come up with a plan and just do it :/

Thankfully, I have a group of amazing friends who look out for me and they advised me on a few things. I am going to list them out for you to follow:

How to protect your home from theft?

There are a few things that you can take care of when you are considering various options on how to prevent theft at home. Here are a few to list down:

  • Take every door and window very seriously: Often we secure the main gate with multiple locks but we tend to overlook the alternative entrances and even the doors inside the home. It is important to have good and secure locks on every door. This will act as an added layer of protection.

  • Do enough lighting around the house: I have particularly felt unsafe in darker areas myself. Same thing goes with the houses. If your neighbourhood is dark, it is most likely to invite shady happenings. Collaborate with your neighbors and get enough lighting around your house.

  • Install smart alarms and security systems: My friends have insisted on this part quite extensively. Technology has advanced to the next level and we must take full advantage of it. I have finally gotten a smart alarm at our home which promises to alert me about any unusual activity. I have also installed a video doorbell to see who wants to come in.

  • Get CCTV: Along with a video doorbell, I have installed a couple of CCTV cameras at the front door and in the hallway. I get live updates on my phone.

I would say if you are looking for a house, look for one in a gated community. They are comparatively safer and you may find security systems in place already.

I hope this clarifies your doubts around how to protect home from theft in India.
