Painting is one of the easiest ways to protect bare metal from rusting but how to protect bare metal from rust before painting? Well, there are a couple of methods that can help you in protecting the metal. I know about two methods, which are Oiling and Blueing. These methods are not permanent, and you can remove them with ease. Let’s discuss them below.

How to Protect Bare Metal Before Painting?

I learned about these methods while doing some research on the steps to keep my window grills rust-free before they get painted.

Applying Oil

Oil is very useful in keeping rust away. It not only keeps the metal lubricated but forms a protective barrier around the metal. This keeps the moisture away and prevents rusting of the metal. The only issue with oiling is that it needs to be done repeatedly, which takes time and energy. You can follow the below steps to apply oil on bare metal.

  • Take some oil in a bowl.

  • Dip a clean cloth and start applying it on the metal surface.

Blueing

This creates a new layer over the bare metal, similar to rust. This is less damaging compared to rust and can be removed quite easily. To apply this, you must spray a salt solution on the metal and then dry it by applying high temperatures.

This is how you can save metals from rusting before painting them. I hope this helps.
