Using a moist cloth, thoroughly wipe the stair trim.
Now, cover the walls, stair treads, and risers with painter's tape.
Cover surrounding surfaces with a drop cloth.
Use fine-grit sandpaper and lightly sand the trim.
Allow it to dry, then use a fresh cloth to wipe remaining dust.
Apply wood filler to holes or cracks and allow it to dry.
Now, put on one even layer of high-quality primer.
Let them dry and sand them gently.
Take an angled brush and apply a semi-gloss paint to trims.
Finally, let the paint dry, and carefully take off the painter's tape.

Hey there. We got a new carpet for our stairs and thought of painting the trim first. As it wasn’t that big of a task, we thought of doing it ourselves. By we, I mean me and my partner who was surprisingly helpful. So, I can share how to paint trim on stairs with you. I will write down the steps for the process in detail to make things easy.
How to Paint Stair Trim?
Here is the method you can follow to paint the trim on your stairs:
The starting point is to apply painter’s tape on the top and bottom regions of the stair trim.
You’ll have to be careful while taping the bottom region as it isn’t straight due to the stairs.
Now comes the painting task. So, grab your brush and paint bucket.
Push the brush down into the groove you taped down so as to paint as close to the stairs as possible.
Paint each side of the stairs one by one. Start painting from your dominant side to get the hang of painting as it is much easier that way.
Ensure you apply thin and even coats to avoid dripping and blobs.
Let the paint coat dry completely and then apply a second coat on either side in similar fashion.
