Painting timber furniture might seem like a daunting task but it’s doable if you follow a few necessary steps. Last month, we bought some second hand wooden furniture and decided to paint them. My sister wanted to make it white but we weren’t sure if we could do it by ourselves. So, we researched a bit and found an easy DIY tutorial which I am sharing below for your reference.

How to Paint Timber Furniture White?

Sanding

You need to sand the surface before applying paint as it will remove any kind of imperfections and smoothen the surface. This will help the paint stick well to the timber. You can use a sandpaper or an electric sander for the job and ensure you wear a face mask while doing it.

Apply Primer

Always prime the surface you want to apply paint on. This will create more adherence and block the timber from bleeding through the paint. You can use a wood specialised primer but if your wood has an existing paint or varnish, it’s advisable to use a multi-surface primer.

Apply Paint

You can use the following types of paint for timber furniture:

  • Latex Paint

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Chalk Paint

  • Oil Paint

Latex is a water-based paint that dries fast but isn’t preferable for furniture that will have a lot of use. Acrylic is more durable and resilient, while chalk paint can leave brush strokes and marks, creating a chipped look. If you want to give your furniture a vintage look, you can consider chalk painting. Oil paint is more expensive but works great for furniture that gets a lot of use.

You can use a mini roller or a small brush to paint your wood. Let it dry completely before applying another layer to get an even finish.
