Here is how to paint over brick exterior:
Begin by checking for cracks, loose mortar or white salts, mould or dampness. Repair the mortar joints and the moisture issues before you start painting. This is important so that the new coating doesn’t peel or trap water.
After this, wash the brick with a stiff brush and mild detergent or pressure wash on a moderate setting to get rid of dirt, algae and loose particles.
Let the bricks dry completely for at least a day or two.
Take a masonry or concrete primer sealer designed for porous surfaces so it can penetrate brick and seal pores.
Apply 1 even coat with a long nap roller and brush for mortar joints, covering every crevice and let the primer dry completely.
After this, pick a high quality acrylic exterior masonry or emulsion paint that has good breathability, UV and is water resistant, suitable for brick applications.
Apply two coats, with the first coat thinned as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Have the second coat full bodied, using a long pile roller and brush to reach joints, wait between coats for the previous one to dry and avoid painting in direct sun or rain.
This is the complete painting process. I hope this helps.
