Hi there. I came across your query regarding how to paint MDF to a mirror finish and I can help. So, for painting an MDF in a mirror finish, you will have to do some good preparation and follow certain steps again and again. I will share the detailed method with you for achieving a mirror-like finish below.

How you can Paint MDF for a Mirror Finish?

  1. Start by cleaning the surface with a clean, dry cloth or use a slightly damp cloth.

  2. Check for dents, scratches or holes in the MDF. If you find any imperfections, apply a high-quality wood filler, slightly overfilling to allow for sanding.

  3. Let the filler dry completely as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.

  4. After the filler dries, sand it flush with the MDF surface using a 120 to 180 grit sandpaper. Follow it up with a fine-grit 240 sandpaper. Don’t over sand the face, though.

  5. Sand the edges with a 120 grit sandpaper, then grab a 180 or 240 grit sandpaper for a finer finish.

  6. Use wood glue to apply a thin and even coat diluted 1:1 with water on the edges to seal them. Even out the glue with a finger or cloth. Wipe off the excess and let it dry.

  7. Once dry, sand very lightly with 240 grit sandpaper to smooth any raised fibres.

  8. The first coat of solvent based primer will penetrate deeply and effectively seal the edges.

  9. Remove any traces of dust with the help of a vacuum cleaner. Then wipe down with a tack cloth.

  10. Prime the surface with a solvent based primer with two even and thin coats. Sand the surface in between the primer coats with a 240 or 320 grit sandpaper.

  11.   Clean the surface again to remove the sanding dust.

  12. You can then apply the top coat. For a high gloss, mirror-like finish, apply multiple thin coats of specialised high-gloss paint and remember to finely sand between final coats.

This is all you need to do.
