How to Paint Over Mahogany Wood?
Here is the process you can follow:
Start by preparing the wooden surface. Clean it to remove dust, dirt and debris. Use a proper cleaner meant for wood. Wipe the surface with a clean and dry cloth.
Once the wood dries, decide whether you need to sand over it or strip the paint in case there’s existing paint on the wood.
If the current paint’s condition is good, you can directly sand over it. However, if the paint is peeling and chipping, strip it away.
The next step is to sand. Use a lower number sandpaper to begin and move up to finer grit sandpaper. You need to sand till the wood becomes soft, even and grippy enough for the paint to adhere to it.
Use a tack cloth to wipe the dust. Wash if necessary.
Apply a coat of shellac primer over the furniture. Be it any kind of paint, apply the primer compulsorily. Some paint manufacturers advise not to, but you should avoid paint bleeding through.
Once the primer dries, apply your paint. At least a couple of coats should be applied. Wait between coats to let the previous one dry completely.
