How to Paint a Door Without Removing it?
I followed his suggestions and found the steps to be pretty straightforward. Here’s how I did it without taking the door off the hinges.
Prep the Door
First, I sanded the entire door using a medium-grit power sander. I didn’t leave the edges and the areas covered by the door trim. After sanding, I washed the door with warm, soapy water, then rinsed it off. I let it dry overnight.
Set Up Your Space
Since I don’t have a storm door, I taped a plastic drop cloth over the door opening to keep bugs and dust out. I also laid down another drop cloth under the door to protect the floor.
Tape and Prime
I taped off the hinges, handles, and other hardware. If your door has a bright color like mine did (yellow), using a primer is key. It helps to cover the old color so it doesn’t affect your new paint.
Painting
Once the primer was dry, I painted the first coat with Valspar Door & Trim paint. After waiting about 8 hours for the first coat to dry, I applied the second coat the next day.
Finishing Touches
While the second coat was still wet, I carefully removed the tape. Once everything was dry, I used a razor blade to scrape off any stray paint on the windows.
And that’s it! My door looks fantastic, and I didn’t have to deal with the effort of removing it. If you follow these steps, you’ll also have a beautifully painted front door in no time, without the extra effort of taking it off the hinges.
