Summary
To paint ceramic tiles in the kitchen, start by cleaning the tiles thoroughly and letting them dry. Lightly sand the surface to help the paint adhere better, then apply a tile-specific primer. Mask surrounding areas before painting. Use ceramic tile paint in thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry fully. Let the tiles cure completely for a durable, refreshed finish.

Here is how to paint ceramic tile in kitchen;

  1. First, prepare the area properly. Cover the kitchen floor with old sheets or plastic to protect it from paint drops. Use masking tape to cover the edges of walls, switches, taps, and kitchen slabs. Check the tiles carefully. If you see broken tiles or damaged grout, repair them using tile filler or fresh grout. Let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

  2. Next, clean the tiles very well. Kitchen tiles are usually covered in oil, grease, and dirt. Use a good tile cleaner and clean one small area at a time. Wipe the tiles with a wet sponge or cloth.

  3. For hard stains, leave the cleaner on the tile for about 20 to 30 seconds, then scrub gently. If there is mould, clean it with one part bleach and three parts water. Rinse the tiles with clean water and allow them to dry fully.

  4. After cleaning, lightly sand the tiles using fine sandpaper. This step helps the primer and paint stick better to the tiles. Do not sand too hard. After sanding, wash the tiles again to remove dust and let them dry completely.

  5. Now apply the primer. Stir the primer well before use. Use a small roller for flat tile areas and a brush for corners and edges.

  6. Apply one smooth and even coat. Do not apply thick layers. Allow the primer to dry fully. Once dry, lightly sand again and wipe off the dust.

  7. Next, apply the tile paint. Stir the paint well. Apply the first thin coat evenly. Let it dry fully, then lightly sand the surface. Apply the second thin coat in the same way for a smooth finish.

  8. The paint may feel dry in a few hours, but it needs about one week to become fully strong. Avoid washing or scrubbing the tiles during this time. After curing, your kitchen tiles will look clean, bright, and new.

This method helps refresh old ceramic tiles and gives your kitchen a clean, new look without replacing them.
