Hi there. I, too, have oak cabinets in my kitchen. We have been thinking of changing the look of our kitchen and painting the cabinets seemed like the way to go. So, my partner and I did it as a DIY last month. I can show you how to paint oak cabinets. You will have to begin with a small preparation before getting to the painting part. Let me share everything.

How to Paint Oak Kitchen Cabinets?

Here is how you can paint your oak cabinets:

  1. First up, clean the cabinets using a strong detergent to remove surface oils.

  2. Once this is done, use a fine-grit sandpaper of 110-120 grit. You have to lightly scuff up the oak surface.

  3. After this, you can apply a high-grade primer to give thre finish a solid foundation. I recommend using a water-based primer. Follow the instructions laid by the manufacturer.

  4. You can then apply two coats of paint to the oak cabinets. Go for a high quality latex paint that is made specifically for kitchen cabinetry.

  5. My advice would be to choose spray paint for a smoother finish, compared to brushing paint. You will have to remove the cabinet doors and take them outside to paint.

  6. Give time for the first coat to dry and only then should you paint the second coat of paint.

This is how to paint an oak cabinet. I hope you find the process helpful.
