Hello there. I wanted to add a beam section under my ceiling and give it a wooden feel as the living room is full of wooden accents. I took help from a friend who is into this field, regarding how to paint a beam to look like wood. So, I can help you with the process that he shared with me. Let me describe it below.

How to Paint Beams to Look Like Wood?
Here is the method:
You need to paint a base colour of the lightest shade you see on a block of wood. You can add glaze to the colour if you wish to have a bit of transparency and a longer drying time to make some lines.
Choose a rich, brown paint of your choice that mimics the wood colour the best as per your taste. Start by painting the edges first. Paint with a flat brush in a few regions to take off a bit of the paint, so the base coat can be exposed from underneath.
After you do that, take the glaze along with black paint in a ratio of 2:1. The black paint should be a deep black tint. Mix them together.
With a round sponge, apply this paint mix without pressing to ensure the glaze remains on the surface. You can make some knots for added wooden texture.
That is all you need to do. I hope this method will help you understand how to make painted beams look like wood.
