A few weeks ago, I was sitting in my living room on a hot afternoon when my ceiling fan started making a weird squeaky noise. At first, I ignored it, but soon that ‘creak-creak’ sound became too annoying to handle. I searched online for a fix, but every guide said, ‘take the fan apart.’

I thought, there has to be a simpler way. And guess what? There is! You can oil a ceiling fan without disassembling it. Here’s how I did it and you can too.

How to Oil a Ceiling Fan Without Disassembling: Step-by-Step Guide

  • Turn Off the Power:

Before anything else, switch off the fan from both the switchboard and the main power supply.

  • Clean the Dust First:

Use a soft cloth or a small brush to wipe off the dust on the blades and the fan motor. Dust can block the oiling area and stop the oil from reaching the bearings.

  • Find the Oil Hole (If It Exists)
    • Some ceiling fans have a small hole on top of the motor housing; usually marked as ‘Oil’ or ‘Lubrication.’

    • If you find it, that’s the place where you’ll add oil.

    • If your fan doesn’t have one, don’t worry; you can still apply oil around the area where the fan body connects to the rod (that’s where the motor bearings usually sit).

  • Use the Right Kind of Oil
    • Do not use regular oils like WD-40 or vegetable oil.

    • Use electric motor oil or turbine oil; something light and made for small motors.

    • You can find this as 3-IN-ONE Motor Oil or Zoom Spout Turbine Oil in any hardware store or online.

  • Apply the Oil Carefully
    • Take a small dropper or syringe and slowly add a few drops (8–10) into the oil hole or near the bearing area.

    • Once done, rotate the blades gently by hand to help the oil spread evenly inside the motor.

  • Test It Out
    • Wait for 10-15 minutes, then turn the power back on.

    • If done right, your fan should spin smoothly, quietly, and a bit faster than before.

If you live in a humid or dusty area, oil your ceiling fan every 12-18 months. Also, clean the blades regularly; even a thin layer of dust can make your fan unbalanced.
