Recently, the tenants in the ground-floor flat moved out, and my landlord informed us to shift to that flat. However, I was unsure how to carry furniture down stairs. Hence, I called my cousin for advice since he is working at a packing and moving company in our native place. He gave me some tips, such as disassembling the furniture and using hand straps. I shared it with you below.

My cousin said to have a helper before moving to keep the furniture balanced and tilted towards your body. Here is the process he informed me of.

  • If you plan to move the furniture, you must disassemble the heavy items if possible, like your bed and table.

Hi Buddy! A few months ago, I faced this horrible task of moving a large furniture like couch, bed and almirah down the stairs by myself. After researching how to move heavy furniture down stairs alone and experimenting, I figured out it can be done in 4 steps. Also, those methods worked perfectly for me, and I wanted to share it with you.

Here’s the steps I followed to move my furnitures downstairs alone:

Disassemble and Prepare

First, I disassembled the furniture as much as possible if there were any detachable parts. This made the furniture lighter. Then, I wrapped the parts in moving blankets and secured them with strong packing tape.

Creating Path

I found that creating a smooth sliding path down the stairs was key. I put an old carpet on the stairs, making sure it was fixed at the top and bottom.

Position Yourself

I positioned myself at the top of the stairs and slowly began to slide it down the carpeted stairs, using my body weight.

Taking the Process Slow

I took my time, stopping after every step to adjust my grip and ensure the furniture was stable.

By following these steps on how to carry heavy furniture down stairs, I was able to move my furniture downstairs without any damage. It was a bit of a workout and required a lot of time, so I would suggest better hire a professional for the shift.
