Almost 2 months ago, when I planned to get my kitchen cabinets painted, I knew that masking was essential to a professional finish. Without it, the paint would easily leak onto walls, countertops, or even onto my appliances. After hiring a professional painter, I learned how to mask kitchen cabinets for painting easily. I have shared the detailed procedure to cover cabinets below.
How to Mask Cabinets to Paint?
Empty the cabinets and use a degreaser to clean the surfaces.
Take out every knob, handle, and even the cabinet doors, if possible.
Where the cabinet edges contact the walls, countertops, and backsplashes, use high-quality painter's tape. Firmly press the masking tape down.
Now, cover appliances, sinks, and counters with plastic sheeting.
After that, to prevent paint drips from hitting the floor, place a canvas drop cloth.
Finally, ensure the tape is securely sealed at all corners and edges before you open the paint can.
After following these tips, the painter started the painting task. I hope this process helps you, too, in masking the cabinets smoothly.

Hello. I recently got my kitchen renovated and painted. During the work, the design team masked the whole kitchen, including the cabinets. As I was there supervising the work the whole time, I can tell you how to mask kitchen cabinets for painting. The process isn’t too complicated but can take some time. It would be good if you do this with one more person to mask and secure things in place. I am sharing the steps below.
How to Mask Cabinets for Painting?
Here is how you can mask the kitchen cabinets:
You’ll need a masking tape.
To mask the cabinet openings, stick the masking tape on the cabinet’s inside, around the edges of the opening. The sticky side should face you.
With the help of the hand masker, tear off a part of plastic wide enough to get to the tape on all 4 sides.
After this, stick the 48-inch plastic onto the tape. Unfold it down.
Let me also tell you about the process to mask the flooring of your kitchen. This will help you limit the mess. Start with the flooring using a leak proof protector. Use a razor knife to cut off sections such that they fit the floor’s size. Also use a white masking tape to tape the sections of the floor.
I recommend you use a white masking tape as it is stronger and doesn’t loosen easily. This is all I have to share about masking kitchen cabinets. I hope you find the steps helpful.
