Last weekend, I got panels installed at home. Though these were normal panels, I wanted to give them a look of plywood. I hired professionals for this job. They added edge banding to cover the open sides, cut grooves to give a panel-like look similar to shiplap, and finished the surface by sanding, priming, and painting/staining it. So, this is how to make plywood look like panels, and it completely changed the look of the space.
How to Make Ply Look Like Wood?
First, the professionals showed me different design options and helped me select one that suited my space.
To hide the rough or exposed plywood edges, they applied edge banding so the panel looked neat and finished.
They cut small grooves on the surface of the plywood to create a panel effect, similar to shiplap. This gave the plywood more depth and style.
The surface was carefully sanded to make it smooth and ready for finishing.
A coat of primer was applied so the paint or stain would stick well and last longer.
Finally, the plywood was either painted or stained to match the overall décor, giving it a clean and polished look.
Hope this helps you.
