How to Install a Toilet on an Uneven Floor?
Here is the method:
Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Loosen and unscrew the water intake line with an adjustable wrench.
Lift the plastic caps off the flange bolts holding the base of the toilet to the floor. Also, loosen the nuts and remove them.
Pull up the toilet and turn it so the drain hole underneath the base is visible. Remove the old wax ring, scraping wax from the toilet base and floor drain with a putty knife.
Place a new wax ring on the bottom of the toilet around the drain hole with the rounded side facing up.
Set it back into the position over the floor drain and ensure the holes in the toilet base slide over the flange bolts.
Next, place a level on the back of the toilet. Push the toilet to the side so it is level. Sit on the toilet to press it firmly into the wax ring, keeping the toilet level.
Try to do this in one go, without moving the toilet here and there while you are sitting on it.
Climb off the toilet, holding it as close to level as possible with your hand. On the other hand, push plastic shims under the raised edge of the toilet base until it sits level on its own.
Begin with a shim near the middle of the raised area and install one or two more as needed.
Slice through any shim that is showing outside the toilet base edge with a utility knife to cut it off. Slip the plastic bolt cap washer over the flange bolts.
Then, slide nuts onto the flange bolts and tighten them with an adjustable wrench. Replace the plastic caps.
Cut the top off a tube of silicone caulk at a 45-degree angle using a utility knife. Squeeze the tube as you move it around the toilet’s base to lay an even bead of caulk.
Wet your finger and slide it along the bead to remove extra caulk.
Reconnect the water line and turn on the water supply.
