How to Install LED Recessed Lights in Drop Ceiling?

1. Take graph paper to make a scale drawing of your room, or use planning software online to plan where every light should go. 

2. You should space them out, thinking about your ceiling height, focal points and focusing on how bright the room’s ambient light will be. 

3. Ensure the weight of the lights is supported. Install extra wire supports over the tile to help hold the lights, one wire to each of the four corners of the tile. 

4. Supporting the bars or blocks with an additional frame that rests on the ceiling grid should also work.

5. Use T grid mounting plates for canless LED downlight fixtures to support the weight and ensure the light is flush with the face of the tile.

6. Use the light’s outline to trace the light’s outline on each ceiling tile where a recessed light will be added. This should be done in the exact centre of the tile, double-checking that the opening size is made as per the installation instructions.

7. Cut the first hole and ensure to dust off any loose particles and set the light back into its opening. 

8. After you cut the hole, ensure that the light fits snugly into its opening. If the hole is cut too large, extended goof ring trims are available to help mask any imperfections.

9. After you cut the hole, position the light fixture. To do this, take out the panel next to the panel that was just cut and place the light over the cut panel, ensuring it is positioned directly over the hole.

10. To wire the lights, the last step is to install the light bulbs and snap the trim ring onto the housing. 

11. After installing the bulb, turn on the lights to finish the installation.

There are different types of lights available in the market. Each of these lights have a different lighting impact and look. Since my house has a high ceiling, I decided to put LED recessed ceiling lights. I searched high and low to figure out a way to install these lights with minimal damage to the wiring. Keep reading to know what I found. 

In case of new construction, I would recommend placing the light in such a way that there is equal distance between them. eg, for a ceiling that is 8-foot-high, you should keep a distance of four feet between each light.  

1. Light Source

   If you have a power source near to you, installing these lights will be breezy. You need to recognize your light source and switch it off from the mainline before any step. 

2. Housing :

   In case you don’t have proper recessed lighting housing on your chilling, you will need to create one. I would recommend hiring a professional for this step. 

3. Bulb :

   Insert the bulb in the correct position in the housing socket. Since household wiring is usually parallel, the trim ring will attach to the parallel wiring.

4. Trim :

   The next step is attaching the trim ring to the extended rim of the light can. Make sure the bulb and trim line up perfectly. 

You can restore power to the main source at this point. Switch on the light to check if they are working properly or not.
