How to get rid of fruit flies in kitchen?

Back in 2019 I shared a flat with a messy girl who had the habit of leaving every food item out in the open uncovered. Her room was filthy. I am someone who cannot stand dirty dishes or stacked trash bins but OMG, living with her was a nightmare. Especially when those pesky little fruit lies in kitchen would have a party. I had to find out how to get rid of fruit flies in kitchen or else my survival would have been extremely difficult. Thankfully, I found out a few things which helped me in getting rid of them. I can share them with you.

• Locate:

  locate the source of these fruit flies. You can find them lingering on either ripe, decaying or rotten food items in your kitchen. Another place they sneak towards is your trash can. If you have an open trash can, you will most likely find the fruit flies there.

• Clean:

  Now that you are aware of the source of these fruit flies in kitchen, proceed to the next step. Eliminate all the possible sources by throwing away rotten food, covering the trash cans, and storing your food items in the refrigerator and covering the other items properly. Seal the packages if they contain food items. 

• Make a trap:

  To get rid of fruit flies in kitchen you will have to go the extra mile. You can make a fruit fly trap using apple cider vinegar mixture spilled over a cone paper or plastic. Once the flies stick to it, wrap it up and throw it out. You can also open a bottle of old beer or alcohol. The fruit flies will get attracted to it and stick on the surface. Simply pick the bottle and carefully throw it out. You can also do this by pouring smaller quantities in a bowl.

• Get professional help:

  I told you my roommate was filthy right, so once she was shown the door we had to call experts to literally deep clean our kitchen to make it good and usable again.

This is an effective way to stop the influx of flies but you can implement some other methods to get rid of kitchen flies. Let me share a few of them here.

How to Get Rid of Food Flies in the Kitchen?

You can implement some methods or use traps to remove fruit flies, like:

• Prepare a rotten fruit trap:

Decaying fruits attract fruit flies. You can put the fruit in a throwaway pot, cover it with plastic wrap and make some holes in it. Once the flies get its smell, they will rush towards it and get stuck inside. You can then simply throw away the entire thing and get rid of the fruit flies.

• Vinegar Solution Trap:

Apple cider vinegar does attract flies and works as an excellent trap. You just need to mix a vinegar solution with some dishwashing liquid, then pour the solution into a bowl or jar and invite the flies to fall on the soapy fluid. Once they fall on it, they will eventually die.

• Sticky Traps -

  Nowadays, hardware stores have several kinds of traps for mice, insects, and even flies. You can simply buy one to capture the flies and then replace them with a new one as per your requirement.
