Last month, I noticed that my thermofoil cabinet was peeling. To fix it, I hired a carpenter. He came, checked the whole cabinet, and started the work by pulling back the thermofoil layer, scraping off the old cement, and applying new contact cement. While he was working, I watched carefully to learn how to fix peeling thermofoil cabinets. I have shared those step-by-step process below for you.
How to Restore a Peeling Thermofoil Cabinet?
First, the carpenter gently pulled back the peeling thermofoil and had me help hold it so it wouldn’t break. Since thermofoil is very thin, he only pulled it as far as it could safely go.
Next, he scraped off old cement on the MDF using a putty knife. Even if the cabinet was never repaired before, he ensured the surface was clean and smooth.
Then, applied contact cement on both the back of the thermofoil and the MDF using a small brush. He didn’t press them together immediately and waited for about 15 minutes for the cement to dry a little.
After that, he pressed the thermofoil back on the MDF and held it firmly for around an hour.
Finally, he cleaned extra cement from the edges by rubbing it gently with his fingers.
I hope this helps you understand the process of fixing a thermofoil cabinet.
