Here is how to fix old wood furniture:

  • Start by cleaning your furniture carefully.

  • Take a soft cloth and some mild soap. Wipe the furniture to remove dust, dirt, and any loose paint.

If the dirt or grime is hard to remove, mix four parts white spirit with one part linseed oil. You can also use a wood cleaner. For small corners, cracks, or hard-to-reach areas, use a putty knife or a dental scraper to gently remove all the dirt.

    • Next, repair cracks or chips in the wood.

    • For small cracks, use wood putty that matches your furniture's colour. Press the putty into the crack with a putty knife and smooth it out. Let it dry completely.

After drying, lightly sand the area to blend with the rest of the furniture. For larger cracks, use epoxy putty because it fills larger gaps better.

      1. Apply wood glue on the broken parts, press them together firmly, and use a clamp if possible.

      2. Wipe away any extra glue immediately.

      3. To fix a dent in wood, dampen the dent slightly with water, cover it with a clean cloth, and press a warm iron on top. The heat helps the wood fibres rise back.

      4. For shallow dents, you can also use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.

      5. For scratches, always sand along the direction of the wood grain with fine sandpaper.

      6. Then use extra-fine sandpaper to make the surface very smooth.

      7. Clean away all dust after sanding.

      8. Then, apply wood oil or wax to make the furniture shine again.

For large cracks, open them slightly with a toothpick so the glue can get inside. Apply wood glue, remove the toothpick, and hold the wood together with tape or clamps until the glue dries completely.
