Start by cleaning your furniture carefully.

For scratches, always sand along the direction of the wood grain with fine sandpaper.
Then use extra-fine sandpaper to make the surface very smooth.

For large cracks, open them slightly with a toothpick so the glue can get inside. Apply wood glue, remove the toothpick, and hold the wood together with tape or clamps until the glue dries completely.
