To make the patch blend in perfectly with the surrounding surface, I feathered the compound out past the patch's edges. I continued this process several times until the patch was level with the rest of the ceiling because it's crucial to let the compound dry completely between each layer before applying another.

After the joint compound had completely cured, I used fine-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the mended area. This process made the finish smoother and the repair less obvious.
