As the carpenter worked, I closely observed the steps that he followed which are like:
He started by throwing down an old drop cloth under the door, just something to catch all the dust and junk while he worked.
The scratches were pretty noticeable, so he began sanding using an orbital sander.
After sanding, he wiped everything down with a cloth to get all the fine dust off.
Then he grabbed some wood filler and a putty knife and pressed the filler right into the scratches.
After waiting for it to dry, he sanded it again, first with rough sandpaper to level it out, then with finer sandpaper to smooth it down.
Next, he used a bit of wood stain, trying to match the door colour. It was not perfect, but pretty close.
After this, I was asked to not touch it as it was drying. By following the necessary steps of sanding, cleaning, and refinishing, he was able to repair the dog scratches.
