A few weeks ago, I noticed my lower kitchen cabinet starting to move away from the wall. At first, it seemed like a minor issue. But then I realised it could lead to the entire cabinet collapsing if not fixed properly. So I hired a carpenter to tackle this issue. I also observed the process he followed for how to fix cabinet pulling away from wall. So I am sharing those below.

How to Fix Kitchen Cabinet that Pulling Away from Wall?

  1. Take everything out of the cabinet.

  2. Check to see what is causing the problem. The most common cause of the problem is a loose screw, just like in my situation.

  3. Look for cracks or soft patches on the wall and the back of the cabinet.

  4. If the screws on your cabinets are loose, take them out.

  5. To detect the studs behind your wall, use a stud finder.

  6. Apply wood filler to the holes.

  7. Give it time to dry and re-drill the pilot holes.

  8. Now, directly insert longer, more robust cabinet screws into wall studs.

  9. Install L-shaped metal braces underneath the cabinet if it still feels unsteady.

  10. Finally, gently adjust the cabinet and tighten all screws.

This is not a DIY task. I suggest you hire a professional to address this issue.

If you notice gaps between cabinets and walls it's likely that the initial installation technique wasn't adequate to keep cabinets fastened. As a result, the cabinets seem to be "pulling away" from the wall. Hence, if you want to know how to fix cabinet pulling away from wall, it is best that you follow the below steps or hire a carpenter to assist you with the same.

How to Fix Kitchen Cabinet that Pulling Away from Wall?

Don't overlook the problem if you see spaces beginning to appear between your kitchen cabinets and the wall. The best course of action is to act quickly before the issue gets worse.

  1. For a strong anchor, re-screw cabinets straight into wall studs. You can use longer screws made specifically for this purpose and find studs.

  2. For a stronger bond, fill up any spaces under cabinets with fresh construction adhesive.

  3. Refinish cabinets using methods such as refacing, repainting, or re-staining. This enables attaching cabinets to the wall and realigning them appropriately.

  4. For the optimum alignment and stability, remove cabinets entirely and reinstall them using best practices as a last resort.

Your budget and the extent of the gap will determine which solution is ideal for you.
