How to Fit a Hinge on a Door?

Here is the process you can use to fit hinges on your door:

1. Take a tape measure and mark the height for the hinges on the door frame. Usually, hinges are placed 5 to 7 inches from the top and 3 inches from the edge and bottom of the door.

2. A mortise is like a cavity where the hinges are fitted. You will have to create them.

3. Position the hinge against the door or door frame at the marked places. Trace the outline of the hinge on the surface using a pencil.

4. Use a sharp chisel and score around the traced outline. 

5. Carefully remove the wood within the scored area using the chisel. 

6. Check the mortise’s depth by placing the hinge in it. The hinge leaf should sit at level with the surface.

7. Repeat the steps for all hinge mortises.

8. Hold the hinge against the mortise on the door frame and align the screw holes.

9. Insert the screws into the holes and tighten them with a screwdriver or drill. 

10. Repeat the steps for all the hinges on the door frame. 

11. Align the hinges on the door with those on the frame. Make sure the hinge pins are inserted into the hinge knuckles for smooth operation.

12. Place the screws into the hinge holes on the door and tighten them.

13. Once the hinges are attached, align the hinges with the recesses on the door frame as you position the door in the doorway. 

14. Make sure the door is level. Secure the hinges to the door frame using screws.
