Hello there. I came across your query and can tell you how to finish plywood edges for painting. So see, to finish the ply before you paint, there are a few things that you need to get done. I recently finished the plywood edges as we were going to a proper paint them properly. I will share exactly what we did below.

Process for Painting Plywood Edges

  1. Apply wood filler so that it covers all the plywood edges well. Apply just enough so that the exposed layers are covered, but not too much.

  2. The more wood filler that you add, the longer it will take to dry.

  3. Sand evenly along the edges with a sander or sandpaper. You can’t angle the sandpaper, or else the edges will not be sharp.

  4. Once the applied filler has dried, sand the edges down with 120 grit sandpaper. Then, smooth out the area with a 180 grit sandpaper.

  5. Add a layer of primer. If you are using a sprayer, then you will need a few extra coats to make sure the plywood is completely covered.

  6. Once the primer dries, sand down the surface with 300 or 320 grit sandpaper. Ensure you don’t remove the primer layer.

  7. Apply the top coat of paint and wait for it to dry. Then sand with a 400 grit sandpaper and apply the second layer.

This is all you need to do. I hope this helps you.
