Summary
Switch off the unit, set the thermostat coldest, and uncap valves on the outdoor unit's pipes. Connect manifold gauge hoses, left to large pipe, right to small. Purge air briefly, then link the middle hose to an upright R22 container. Monitor gauges until pressures equalize (left below 60psi), briefly open left handle to adjust, and run for 5 minutes. Check superheat 6 inches from the large pipe valve against the pressure-temperature chart using a thermometer. Add R22 until superheat hits 8-18 degrees (ideally 12 at 70psi/85°F); avoid overcharge below 7 degrees. Close valves, disconnect hoses, recap, and finish.

Below, you can find how to fill R22 gas in AC:

  1. First, switch off your AC and set the thermostat to its coldest setting.

  2. Now on the pipes that enter the outside unit, remove the R22 refrigerant valve caps.

  3. Then, connect the R22 manifold gauge left hand hose to the large pipe valve.

  4. Then connect the manifold gauge right hand hose to the small pipe valve.

  5. Remove the air from the hoses by opening every handle for a second.

  6. Join the R22 manifold gauge middle hose to the R22 refrigerant container.

  7. Flip the R22 container upright and open the valve.

  8. Watch the left and right gauges to see when pressure equalises.

  9. Ensure the left hand gauge reads below 60psi. Open the left hand gauge handle for a short duration to drop pressure. Allow the system to run for like 5 minutes.

  10. Use the thermometer 6 inches from valve on the large pipe to determine the superheat.

  11. Compare the temperature to left hand gauge pressure and check pressure/temperature chart.

  12. If super-heat is 20+ degrees above P/T chart reading, add more R22 until it is between 8 and 18 degrees. A super-heat of 12 degrees is often optimal (70psi at 85 degrees). A superheat below 7 degrees will indicate an overcharge.

  13. Close the container valve, disconnect hoses and replace valve caps.

See, the process is complicated, so avoid doing it on your own and only get it done through a licensed technician.
