In my home, I have a 22-year-old dining table that was given to my mother at her marriage. Two weeks ago, I noticed some knot holes in the wood, so I called a carpenter to fix them. He came with his tools, sanded the table surface smoothly, sealed the knot holes with a wood sealer, and then completed the filling process. I observed the entire process of how to fill knot holes in wood, hence shared the same below.

How to Fill a Knot Hole in Wood?

  1. First, he sanded the table surface smoothly with sandpaper.

  2. Then, he sealed the knot holes with a wood sealer so that bubbles and stains don’t spread.

  3. After that, he placed a strong tape at the back of the hole to stop leakage.

  4. He mixed epoxy resin and filled the knot holes, carefully overfilling them to cover properly.

  5. The carpenter let the epoxy dry for two days.

  6. After two days, he came again and removed the tape, then sanded the area to make it even with the table surface.

  7. Finally, he cleaned the surface and applied a natural wood finish to protect it and bring back the shine.

So, I would say this is not a DIY process. It’s better to hire a professional for proper fixing. Hope this helps you.

Hey. I own a vintage wooden desk which I’ve been using in my home office for a long time now. However, as it is quite old, I observed knot holes forming in the wood. I looked up how to fill knot holes in wood and found a good DIY solution. All I used was putty and shaped it with my finger to seal the hole. I’ll share the complete method below for you to understand it easily.

How to Fill a Knot Hole in Wood?

Here is how I filled a knot hole in my wooden furniture:

  1. I started out by removing the part of the furniture with the knothole. If it’s possible for you to take out the part, do it.

  2. Then, I took the putty and worked it with my finger till it became soft and workable like clay. When it comes to putty, less is kind of more.

  3. The third step was to apply the putty in the crannies and nooks. You should try to flatten the putty as much as possible, using your fingers to avoid using too much.

  4. Next, I shaped the putty in the hole with my fingers till it evened out with its surroundings.

  5. Sanding is a crucial step. I sanded with a sanding block for better control. However, if you’re working in a bigger region, a sander would be the right pick. You can finish using the block.

  6. Sanding has to be performed until there are no ridges or dents on the surface. So, I didn’t stop till I felt no roughness.

  7. I moved on to applying 2 coats of the shellac primer. You have to let it dry before moving on to painting.

  8. I applied 2 coats of paint and waited for the first coat before applying the next.

That’s all. You can patch the knot hole in the wood using the above steps. I hope this helps you to know how to fill knot holes in wood.
