A few months ago, I noticed that there was a gap between the wall and countertop of my kitchen. Hence, I asked my friend, an interior designer, how to fill gap between wall and countertop. He said the gap can crop up later no matter how hard you try to close it out. If the gap between countertop and wall is more than 38 inches, then it is best to trim it. If the gap is narrowed down then it can be caulked.
How to Fill a Gap Between Countertop and Wall?
I then researched about the methods to fill the gap between the wall and the countertop and found that it can be
filled by using a drill, a flat pry bar, shims and a hammer. For that, you need to follow the below process:
Take out all screws using the drill and remove them.
Insert a flat bar on the toe kick of the cabinet to push the countertop closer to the wall.
Then put the wood shims under the toe kick to keep the cabinet in position.
Put the screws into the new holes and check the shims after fastening the cabinet to the wall.
Check for loose screws, and replace any loose screws with thicker ones.
If the gap is 1/4th or less then it can be filled with silicone or latex caulk. Backer Rod needs to be put in if the gap is wider, this serves as foam and supports the caulk.
You can push it into the gap with a putty knife without taking out the cabinet. For caulking, you need to follow the below steps:
Put a tape on the countertop edge just above the gap.
Apply a thin continuous spread of caulk with a caulking gun.
Tool the caulk by drawing your finger alongside it to form a concave surface.
Finally, remove the tape carefully before the caulk sets.
This is the procedure on how to fill gap between countertop and wall. I hope you found this procedure easy and it will help you solve the problem of closing the gap.
