I wanted to paint my old wooden table, but noticed many small cracks. Curious about how to fill cracks in wood before painting, I learned that the wood must be cleaned thoroughly, and the filler pressed firmly into the cracks with a putty knife. Epoxy resin is especially effective, strengthening the wood, smoothing the surface, and preparing it perfectly for painting. I have shared the detailed steps I came across below.
How to Fill Wood Cracks Before Painting?
First, clean the wood with a brush to remove dust and old paint.
Check the crack and remove dust inside it.
Now, cover the backside of the wood with tape to stop the epoxy from leaking.
Mix the epoxy resin and hardener carefully. If you want colour, mix it separately before adding.
Fill the crack slowly with epoxy. For deep cracks, do it in layers.
Use a small torch lightly to remove air bubbles. Leave it to dry.
Scrape off extra epoxy and remove the tape. Now the wood is smooth and ready for painting.
Before learning the process, I thought it was a DIY job. Later, I planned to hire a professional painter, as I found the steps a little complex.
