Hello Ananthi. I can help you in figuring out how to design bathroom lighting. See, there are two things to consider here: first is the kind of feel you want because lighting has a direct influence on the mood and feel of any space. Second would be to focus on functionality which will help you decide the kind of lighting and its placement. I will give you more information below.

How to Design and Layer Bathroom Lighting?

  1. Begin with ambient lighting as the base layer. Use fixtures like ceiling-mounted lights or chandeliers to give an overall light spread.

  2. Then, add task lighting to areas where tasks would be performed. These will be around the vanity area, toilet and bathing area, depending on what your bathroom has.

  3. Lastly, add accent lighting to highlight the architectural and or design elements of the bathroom.

Hope this helps.

My sister bought a flat last year and is now planning to do interior design work. To get some ideas, she called to ask me for advice, as I am an interior design student. During our conversation, I gave her several ideas, including how to design bathroom lighting. I mentioned some design ideas like general lighting, task lighting, nightlights, and lighting controls. Below, I will explain these ideas in detail to give you a better understanding.

How to Create an Effective Bathroom Lighting Design?

Here are the ideas to make your bathroom lighting more effective.

  1. General Lighting: I told my sister not to just place lights randomly on the ceiling. Instead, it is better to place downlights near the walls or tiles to create a soft glow.

  2. Task Lighting: For things like shaving or doing makeup, I said it is best to have lights on both sides of the mirror. Pendants or mirrors with built-in lights also work well..

  3. Night Lighting: I suggested adding low-level lights that turn on automatically at night. Small floor light strips under the sink can guide the way and also look stylish.

  4. Lighting Controls: Lastly, I told her to go for dimmable lights. Having separate controls for general and mirror lights gives more comfort and lets you set the mood.

I hope this helps you get an idea, too.
