Last Diwali, when my mother planned to repaint our living room, she insisted on sharp, clean edges around the corners and trims. She asked me to find out how it’s done, and as it wasn’t my cup of tea, so I hired a professional painter. Watching the process he followed seemed so simple in their hands, but required a level of precision that left me impressed. You can get a step-by-step process on how to cut in when painting a wall below.

How to Cut in Painting a Wall?
Here is the process I observed while the painter was working.
Use the Right Brush: He used an angled sash brush, which allows for better control, especially near the edges. It made it easier to paint straight lines without overlapping onto adjacent surfaces.
Tape for Clean Lines: He carefully applied painter’s tape along the edges of the wall to protect trims, ceilings, and corners.
Load the Brush Correctly: Instead of overloading the brush, he dipped it halfway into the paint and tapped off the excess.
Start a Few Inches Away: He didn’t start painting directly on the edge. Instead, he began a few inches away and slowly worked his way closer for a neat finish.
Brush Technique: He then brushed the paint on the wall, about 1/2 inch from the trim. Following that, he made a second pass, cutting in all the way to the trim. He avoided ‘pushing’ the paint, which could leave uneven strokes.
Steady Strokes: With slow and steady movements, he glided the brush along the edge. It created sharp and clean lines.
The result was flawless. I hope you get an idea of how to cut in a wall painting.
