4. Then select "Know Your Vehicle Details."

5. Then, enter your vehicle's registration number and verification code to access its details.

Once you've accessed your vehicle's details, you should see a section titled "Hypothecation Termination Status." If the status reads "Terminated," then that means that the hypothecation has been cancelled and you're free to sell or transfer ownership of the vehicle without any legal hurdles. If the status reads "Not Terminated," check with the seller to ensure they have cleared the outstanding loan amount and have the necessary paperwork to prove it.

I learnt that to apply for hypothecation cancellation online, one has to go to the following website:

• Enter your vehicle registration number, State and RTO

• Click on proceed

• Once logged in you will find Vahan Citizen Services

• You will see an option to ‘know your application status.’ click on it

• Enter the application number/ acknowledgement number that you received while filing the hypothecation termination application

• If the hypothecation application is accepted along with given documents then the status will be updated to ‘removed’

This information is verified by RTO officials first before updating the system. If you find it pending you can visit the RTO office and seek more information.

If you are told that documentation error happened at your end then these are the documents you must carry with you:

• Original Registration Certificate (RC)

• Original bank number objection certificate (NOC)

• Valid insurance certificate

• Copy of PAN card

• Original FORM 35 (two copies and both have to be signed by the bank as well as the owner)

• Two copies of the Pollution Under control certificate (PUC) 

• Copy of address proof

• Print of the payment receipt
