One crucial electrical safety and maintenance task is to check the current in switch board. The best instrument for this is a multimeter, either digital or analog. It measures electrical characteristics such as resistance, voltage, and current. Digital multimeters (DMMs), which provide accurate readings on a screen, are simpler and safer to use at home than analog multimeters, which use a needle and scale.

How to Measure Switch Current?

  1. Switch Off Power: Prior to connecting the multimeter, always turn off the main power source.

  2. Depending on the kind of circuit, set the multimeter to "A" (Amperes) and choose between AC and DC.

  3. Connect the Probes: Place the black probe in "COM" and the red probe in "A."

  4. Connect in Series: To measure current flow, connect probes to the circuit in series.

  5. Read and Record: Before disconnecting the probes, turn the circuit on, record the reading, and then turn it off.

You can determine whether current is actually passing through the switchboard by correctly following these steps. After connecting the probes in series, turning on the circuit will display a numerical reading in Amperes (A) on a digital multimeter. While 0 A shows no current, which could be the result of a fault, an open circuit, or the switch being off, any reading above 0 A indicates current flowing.

When the needle of an analog multimeter moves, current is flowing; when it does not, current is not flowing.
