How Do I Change a Tap Washer?

You first need to turn off the water supply to the tap. If there’s an isolation valve before your tap, you can just use this to turn off the supply. Then, you can follow the steps below.

1. After you turn off the tap, I learned you have to remove the tap head. The plumber used a screwdriver to remove the head completely. He mentioned this process can differ depending on the type of tap you have.

2. Then, you will see a tap valve, which you can loosen with an adjustable spanner. That’s what I saw the plumber do.

3. Next, I saw him removing the tap washer, which was located at the bottom of the valve.

4. Finally, he installed the new tap washer of the same size.

• Beneath the valve, the tap washer is fastened in position using a nut or screw. Use a spanner to remove the tap washer, or try penetrating the oil surrounding it and letting it soak in before attempting to undo it.

• Get a replacement tap washer in the same size to replace the worn-out, old one.

• Assemble the tap once more. Take care not to overtighten the valve as this could break the tap when you screw it back in. Put the tap's top back on.

• Pull out the plug, remove the towel from your washbasin, and turn the water back on.
