To change cast iron pipe to PVC, you must cut away a part of the old pipe and apply a rubber coupling. I came to know this a few months ago, when I hired a plumber to install a PVC pipe. PVC is lighter, easier to work with, and rust-resistant, so I wanted to replace my old cast iron pipe with it. I observed the process he performed, so mentioning the same below.

10 Steps for Replacing Cast Iron Pipe with PVC

  1. Before beginning, turn off the main water supply.

  2. To keep the pipe from dropping after being cut, secure it with a safety strap.

  3. Now, you must measure and mark the portion of the old cast iron pipe that you wish to replace.

  4. Carefully cut the pipe using a reciprocating saw.

  5. After that, file down the cast iron's sharp edges.

  6. Attach flexible rubber couplings to the cast iron pipe's two ends.

  7. Now, to check alignment, measure the gap, cut the PVC pipe to size, and then dry-fit it.

  8. You must now apply cement and PVC primer to the fitting joints.

  9. Insert the PVC into the couplings and, using a screwdriver, tighten the stainless-steel clamps.

  10. Finally, check the pipe for leaks by running water through it.

This is the process the professional plumber I hired followed. I believe switching to PVC pipe will save me money on repairs and ensure a smoother flow. Please give a thumbs up if you found these steps helpful.
