I recently had to figure out how to calculate wood required for door frame, as the construction work got over of my new home. Honestly, when I researched, I found the calculation is simpler than I expected. All I need to do is to calculate the volume of each part of the frame, the two vertical jambs, the top horizontal piece (head), and, if included, the bottom piece I have shared the calculation steps below. 

How to Find Wood Required for Door Frame?

Here’s a step-by-step process I came across and you, too, can follow.

Measure the Door Frame Dimensions

For a standard 7 feet by 3 feet door, the frame typically has the following dimensions.

1. Jambs (Vertical Sides): 7 feet high

2. Head (Top Piece): 3 feet wide

3. Sill (Bottom Piece: Optional): 3 feet wide

4. Thickness of wood: Usually 1.5 inches (0.125 feet)

5. Depth of frame: Around 4.5 inches (0.375 feet)

Calculate Volume for Each Part

1. Volume of Two Vertical Jambs

2. Volume of one jamb = Height × Thickness × Depth = 7 ft × 0.125 ft × 0.375 ft = 0.3281 cubic feet

3. Since there are two jambs: 0.3281 × 2 = 0.6562 cubic feet

4. Volume of the Head (Top Piece) = Width × Thickness × Depth = 3 ft × 0.125 ft × 0.375 ft = 0.1406 cubic feet

5. Volume of the Sill (Bottom Piece - If Included) = Width × Thickness × Depth = 3 ft × 0.125 ft × 0.375 ft = 0.1406 cubic feet

6. Total Volume of Wood Required:

7. Without Sill: 0.6562 + 0.1406 = 0.7968 cubic feet

8. With Sill: 0.7968 + 0.1406 = 0.9375 cubic feet

You just need to have some fundamental Mathematical abilities to figure out how many cubic feet of wood are required for a door frame. Follow the steps given below:

1. Measuring the length, breadth, and height in terms of feet of every piece of door frame. The height of a frame is its measurement from bottom to top; its breadth is its measurement across its top; and its length is its thickness.

2. If you already have the measurements in some other unit like inch, yard, and so on, then you can do the conversion using the following technique:

• 1 centimeter = 0.032 feet

• 1 meter = 3.28 feet

• 1 inch = 0.83 feet

• 1 yard = 3 feet

3. Now, multiply the value of length, breadth, and height to get the value of cubic feet of wood.
