A building's floor area in relation to the size of the lot or parcel it is situated on is measured using a formula called the floor area ratio, or FAR. By dividing the total area of the building by the total area of the parcel (building area minus lot area), the floor area ratio (FAR), which is expressed as a decimal number, is obtained.
