Summary
Measure the walls by finding the width and height of each wall. Then, calculate the wall area by multiplying the width by the height for each wall to determine the total square footage of the exterior surface. Subtract the non-paintable area, like doors and window,s from the total square footage to get the paintable area. Measure the areas for trims and add 10 percent for wastage. Add them to the paintable area to get the total exterior painting area.

To calculate the external painting area, first determine the overall square footage and then subtract the openings. The calculation method includes measuring your property's exterior surfaces and compensating for portions that do not require painting, such as doors and windows. I have shared in detail how to calculate exterior painting area below.

How can I Calculate Exterior Painting Area?

  • Begin by measuring the entire length of all external walls.

  • To calculate the perimeter of a building, add the lengths of each side.

  • Next, measure each wall's height from the ground to the roofline.

  • Now, to get the total wall area, multiply the perimeter by the height. You can use the formula: Exterior Wall Area = Perimeter × Height

  • After that, the area of windows, doors, and other major openings that won't be painted should be subtracted.

    • A standard door is roughly 20 to 25 square feet.

    • A typical window is between 10 and 15 square feet.

  • Finally, if appropriate, include sections such as: Walls with parapets, exterior balconies, architectural elements, or external columns.

To estimate paint quantity, labour costs, and the total project budget, you must find out the exterior painting area. The final painting area estimate formula is:

Net Exterior Paintable Area =

(Perimeter × Height) – Openings + Extra Surfaces

Important Tips for Accurate Painting Area Calculation

  • To prevent mistakes, always measure in the same unit (feet or meters).

  • Divide the structure into smaller rectangles and perform separate calculations for irregular shapes.

  • For texture, uneven surfaces, or waste, add 105 to 15% more space.

Hope you found this method helpful.

Here is how to calculate exterior painting area:

  1. Measure Every Wall: Begin by using a tape measure to find the width and height of every exterior wall. Measure in feet, okay?

  2. Calculate Individual Wall Area: Now, you need to calculate the wall area of each wall. To do this, multiply the width by the height for every wall to get the square footage. Use this formula for every exterior wall.

  3. Total Wall Area: After this, add up the square footage of all the walls to get the total wall area of the exterior surface.

  4. Non-Paintable Area: Use the same method and measure the width and height of all the non-paintable regions, which include the doors, windows and other unpaintable surfaces.

  5. Calculate each Area: Then calculate the individual areas by multiplying the width by the height. Add all these areas up and subtract them from the total wall area from the 3rd step.

  6. Measure Trim and Details: Measure linear feet of trims, railings, etc. Multiply by their average width to estimate these areas separately.

  7. Calculate for Coats: Multiply the final net paintable square footage by the total number of coats you plan to apply, which is usually 2 to 3. This will give you the total area needed to be painted.

  8. Add Wastage: You should add about 10 percent extra for spills, touch ups and waste.

This is all about the process to calculate the exterior paint area for a house. I hope you will find this useful.
