Understanding BMC water bill calculation is essential if you want to track your water usage and avoid unexpected charges. I learned this firsthand when I received a surprisingly exorbitant bill and asked my uncle regarding the same. He told me to calculate it, you'll need to know your water usage in kiloliters. I have shared the entire tips he shared with me to do the calculations.
How to Calculate Your BMC Water Bill?
My uncle said, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation follows a slab system, where the water rates increase as consumption goes up. Here is the process my uncle shared with me.
Look at your water meter reading to determine how many liters you've used in a billing cycle. BMC calculates bills based on kiloliters (1 kiloliter = 1,000 liters).
Understand the residential water rates:
Up to 8,000 liters: Rs 6 per kiloliter
8,001 to 25,000 liters: Rs 11 per kiloliter
25,001 to 50,000 liters: Rs 26 per kiloliter
Above 50,000 liters: Rs 45 per kiloliter
Apply the slab system. If your usage is 30,000 liters, the first 8,000 liters will be charged at Rs 6 per kiloliter, the next 17,000 liters at Rs 11, and the remaining 5,000 liters at Rs 26 per kiloliter.
Multiply your consumption in each slab by the respective rate. Add up the amounts to get your last bill.
